In an age that seems to be losing so many artisanal skills, there’s one craft that shows no sign of dying. Fine upholstery will always demand a hands- on set of skills that no machine can replace. And whatever the developments in modern fabrics and furniture- making, we are always going to want to preserve and refurbish our cherished furniture and antiques, meaning we need to inherit the skills of our ancestors. Many upholstery skills, though, can be mastered by amateurs, under skilled tuition.
Padgham Upholstery & Supplies has been upholstering furniture in and around Moorabbin for over 25 years, drawing on the skills of Adrian Padgham, who boasts 47 years in the trade, and Dianne, who manages the business and is responsible for the sourcing of fabrics and upholstery supplies. In 2006 we began selling upholstery supplies to Melbourne’s hobby upholsterers, and teaching upholstery classes. We’ve won highly- prized awards for both our upholstery and our training. We now ship supplies throughout Australia and to New Zealand, and conduct evening and intensive day- time classes in traditional upholstery skills.
We’re a one-stop upholstery shop. To complement our classes, we now supply a complete range of upholstery fabrics, tools and consumable supplies.
So if you’ve got an upholstery job, you can take it to us and let Adrian work his magic, or if you would like to learn traditional skills you can take one of our classes and learn how to do it for yourself. The skills learnt in class will give you a sound base to give any upholstery project a go, modern or traditional. (Warning – once you learn the basic skills, upholstery is an addictive craft!)
